About us

Pawz for Thought is a charity based in Sunderland that helps animals in need across the North East. Since our beginning in 2003 we have grown and are now a very busy charity, helping thousands of animals each year. The animals we help include companion animals such as cats, rabbits, birds and other animals, as well as a huge range of wildlife. Our incredible volunteers support everything we do: animal rescue and transport; animal care; cleaning; admin and reception; fundraising and events; fostering and rehoming.

We are an entirely volunteer-run organisation and therefore are always looking for volunteers to support us in a range of roles.

The role

We are currently looking for volunteers to welcome a hedgehog or hedgehogs to their garden or land, across the North East. We rescue hundreds of hedgehogs every year and whilst they can ideally go back to the area they were rescued from, this is not always the case. We are therefore looking for volunteers who have appropriate gardens or land to release hedgehogs. Volunteers will support feed and create a safe space for hedgehogs to thrive.

Main tasks and activities

• Taking hedgehogs to be released.
• Support feeding hedgehogs daily.
• Where needed, creating a safe space for hedgehogs with a hedgehog house or natural materials such as leaves.
• Keeping an eye on hedgehogs (where possible without disturbing them) and checking their welfare.

Relevant skills

• An interest and/or passion for wildlife.
• A safe and welcoming space for hedgehogs.
