🐢😏 Meet Harry – The Cheeky Gentleman with a Big Personality! 😏🐢
If you’re after a tortoise with a sense of humour (intentional or not), let us introduce Harry, a 9-year-old male Hermann’s tortoise (Hermann’s tortoise) who definitely keeps life… interesting.
Harry is full of character. He enjoys all the usual tortoise pastimes — basking under his lamp, wandering about with purpose, and demolishing a plate of leafy greens — but he also has a slightly cheeky side. Like many male tortoises, Harry occasionally likes to assert himself… by enthusiastically mounting his décor and producing some rather questionable (and surprisingly loud!) noises. Yes, it’s completely normal. No, you will never fully get used to it. 😄
It’s all part of owning a male tortoise — and honestly, it just adds to his charm.
At 9 years old, Harry is still a youngster in tortoise terms. With proper care, he could be with you for decades to come (50+ years!), so he’s looking for a committed, knowledgeable home ready for the long haul.
🏡 What Harry Needs
Hermann’s tortoises have very specific care requirements and are best suited to someone experienced with reptiles.
🌞 Housing & Environment
- A large tortoise table or indoor enclosure (minimum 120cm x 60cm, ideally larger).
- Access to a secure outdoor run in warmer months for natural sunlight.
- UVB lighting and a basking lamp are essential indoors.
- Temperature gradient: basking area around 30–32°C, cooler end 20–22°C.
- Natural substrate like topsoil/sand mix for digging.
🥗 Diet
- A diet rich in leafy greens and wild weeds (dandelion, plantain, sow thistle).
- Strictly no fruit or sugary foods.
- Calcium supplementation for shell health.
- Fresh water available at all times.
🐢 Care & Enrichment
- Space to roam and explore — Harry is an active boy.
- Hides and varied terrain to keep life interesting.
- Routine and consistency (with occasional furniture rearranging… at his discretion).
- Regular health checks with an exotics vet.
- Potential hibernation (brumation) depending on health and setup.
🌟 Fun (and Honest!) Tortoise Facts
- Male tortoises often display… enthusiastic behaviour during breeding season — including mounting objects and making noises.
- Hermann’s tortoises can recognise feeding times (and will absolutely demand them).
- They may look slow, but they’re surprisingly strong and persistent.
- With good care, they can be lifelong companions — think generations, not years.
💚 Why Adopt Harry?
Because he’s not just a tortoise — he’s a whole personality. From his determined little stomps to his unforgettable antics, Harry will keep you entertained while also being a fascinating, rewarding reptile companion.
He’s looking for a home that understands male tortoise behaviour, appreciates a bit of cheekiness, and is ready for a long-term commitment.
If you’ve got the right setup and a sense of humour… Harry is ready to make himself very much at home. 🐢✨
