Our cat co-ordinator Karen is a mad cat lady even when she is on holiday!!! As the regular followers of our Facebook page will have seen recently, she was collecting donations through Just Giving to help feed the street cats in Rhodes. Having been a very frequent visitor to Greece over the last 23 years, last year she was amazed by the work of the Greek Cat Welfare Society (Rhodes) because they are neutering street cats and the difference they are making to cat welfare on the island is huge. They also have winter feeding programmes. Karen decided to raise some funds to help and raised 650 to spend on food and much needed medical supplies.
Karen and her sister met with Andrea who runs the Greek Cat Welfare Society in Rhodes and visited the vets to buy supplies to help with the neutering programme – the previous week they had neutered 150 cats in one small area of Rhodes. They also went to the wholesaler and bought lots of food. They visited the wonderful cat sanctuary at Kallithea and they fed the cats in Lindos every morning and evening with the supplies – as well as feeding the 3 permanent fury friends in their apartment (and another 6 that arrived over the week!). Pefkos has taken cat welfare very seriously in the last 5 years while Andrea has been neutering the cats and they have cat feeding areas in the village which is brilliant to see. If you are ever in Rhodes, look out for the donation boxes around the island for the Greek Cat Welfare Society and seek out the sanctuary at Kallithea.
The Just Giving page is still open too as there are some supplies that Karen is going to post out to Andrea. The link is:
